The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the first iPhones to have a new type of cutout display called Dynamic Island, replacing the notch since the iPhone X introduced in 2017. iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models (as well as the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus) sold in the United States drop support for physical SIM cards, making them the first iPhone models since the CDMA variant of the iPhone 4 to not come with a discrete SIM card reader.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a new A16 Bionic system on a chip (SoC), built on TSMC's N4 fabrication process, superseding the A15 Bionic seen on the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro lineup, the 3rd generation iPhone SE, and the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.
The devices' rear camera lenses have gotten larger, featuring a 48-megapixel sensor, 4 times larger than the 12MP sensor used on iPhones since 2015. This allows a new 2x telephoto mode, which allows for a 2x zoom and 4k video at 24fps, the industry Cinematic Mode standard. Apple now uses a new "Photonic Engine" for better image and video quality, and for video, it now has a video stabilization feature called Action Mode. The front-facing camera now has autofocus, and multiple people can be recognized in a Portrait Mode shot.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have a Super Retina XDR OLED display with a typical 1,000 nits, peak of 1,600 nits and outdoor peak at 2000 nits. The display also has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, with LTPO technology. The iPhone 14 Pro has a resolution of 2556×1179 pixels at 460 ppi, while the Pro Max variant has a resolution of 2796×1290 pixels at 460 ppi. They have a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating with support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously. Both variants also support the always on display feature. The adaptive 120 Hz refresh rate can reduce down to 1 Hz to save battery life whilst in Always On mode.
The Dynamic Island is a reimagining of the sensor notch found in previous iPhone models starting with iPhone X, which in the iPhone 14 Pro is moved to a cutout slightly detached from the top of the screen. It is designed to serve useful information, such as hardware and system-level notifications, media playback data, and other app-specific functionality that Apple calls Live Activities. These icons may appear as an expansion on either side of the sensors, with the background matching the black color of the screen cutout and appearing to seamlessly expand it.[13] The Dynamic Island can also expand further into the wider iPhone 14 display. For example, notifications for incoming calls appear in a banner that stretches out horizontally from the sensors, while Face ID indicators drop down vertically from the sensor cutout rather than appearing in the center of the display as on previous models.
The Dynamic Island can also be tapped to view additional details; for example, ongoing activities like Maps directions or sports scores can also be expanded by tapping and holding the area.
